Reading
At Northway Infants and Carrant Brook Junior School, we are committed to providing every child with a high-quality reading education, grounded in expert knowledge of the EYFS Framework and National Curriculum. We nurture confident, enthusiastic readers who not only acquire the skills required for reading success but also develop a genuine enjoyment of literature and language. Through rich and varied texts, pupils build the knowledge, vocabulary and cultural capital needed to understand and engage with the world around them. As their exposure to stories, ideas and experiences broadens, so too does their comprehension, critical thinking and appreciation of reading.
As part of Two Schools, One Community, we are ambitious for all learners, including those who are disadvantaged, have SEND, or face social and communication barriers. We ensure that every child is supported and challenged to achieve their full potential as a reader.
By the time pupils leave Carrant Brook, they are equipped with the confidence and independence to explore a wide range of texts with curiosity and purpose. Strong reading skills enable them to communicate effectively, access new knowledge, participate fully in society and flourish in their future education. Our aim is that every child leaves primary school as an engaged, resilient and capable reader, ready to continue their reading journey beyond Year 6.
Children begin their reading journey in the Early Years through the systematic teaching of phonics using the Read Write Inc. programme. Alongside this, we use the Gloucestershire Literacy Association (GLA) approach, including Echo Reading, to develop fluency, expression and intonation.
At Carrant Brook, reading comprehension is taught through the Pearson Bug Club Comprehension programme, which uses a structured, discussion-based approach to deepen pupils' understanding of texts. Aligned with National Curriculum expectations, the programme follows a consistent teaching sequence that promotes effective comprehension strategies and rich classroom dialogue. Whole-class reading lessons are centred around a shared text, ensuring that all pupils can engage with and discuss the same high-quality material, regardless of their decoding ability. In addition, we follow the GLA-agreed approach of using Readers' Theatre to enhance engagement, strengthen comprehension and improve reading fluency through repeated, purposeful reading.

Phonics
Carrant Brook Junior School uses Read Write Inc. as catch-up and intervention programme for those children who have not passed their KS1 phonics screening or who are insecure in with their phonics.
Read Write Inc. Phonics teaches children to read and write through a systematic approach to literacy rooted in phonics. Most children complete the programme by the first term of Year 2 while those in need of further support may continue until the end of Year 4.
In some cases, phonics interventions may occur in Years 5 and 6 for those children who still require this additional provision.
