Statement of Intent

The National Curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

At Carrant Brook, our Art curriculum provides opportunities for our children to experience the main areas of artistic study as defined in the National Curriculum. The coherent and sequenced design of our curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to invent, and create their own works of art and design (We are inspired). We teach our pupils to think critically
in order to develop them as better artists (We are resilient) and ensure that the knowledge they gain, provides our children with a better understanding of art and design and how it has shaped our history, culture and nation (We are caring).

Our teaching enables children to have opportunities to

          • experiment with a range of media
          • use a range of materials and techniques competently
          • appreciate a wide range of artists and artworks
          • develop their observation and description skills
          • express ideas and feelings through creative work in both two and three dimensions
          • evaluate their work and the work of others
          • discuss their work using appropriate vocabulary
          • relate artwork to other areas of the curriculum
          • design and present work for display

          • Our principal aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in art and design and we use a wide range of teaching styles to do this. These include class, group and individual instruction and guidance, exposition and demonstration, and the use of questioning and discussion.
